The Royal Cup was held in Nairobi

Sixteen teams from Dawoodi Bohra community centres across the globe gathered for the Saifee Burhani Football Cup (SBFC) at the community’s Annadil Jamaly (ANJ) grounds in Nairobi between 11 – 15 December, 2024.

The event kicked off with an elaborate opening ceremony under the stars on December 11. Teams were introduced on stage, each receiving custom kits from their sponsors followed by the unveiling of the Royal Cup Trophy. Yusuf Ezzi of the ANJ committee welcomed players, guests, and spectators with a speech, setting the tone for the thrilling days ahead.

“It was an electric atmosphere at the ANJ. It was such an honour to host community members from around the world for this tournament,” said one of the organisers.

The lush ANJ grounds transformed into a colourful spectacle as players donned their team uniforms and captivated spectators with their  energy and passion for the beautiful game.

This was the first time the matches were streamed live to an international audience in addition to live updates via social media platforms.  This enabled fans around the world to stay engaged and witness edge-of-the-seat performances.

“The success of the event was a testament to meticulous planning and seamless teamwork. The organisers went to great lengths to ensure everything from scheduling, refereeing and communication with teams, was seamlessly executed,” said a member of the local community.

The Venue management team ensured every detail was accounted for, from preparing the turf to organizing seating and VIP areas, creating a smooth and enjoyable experience for all.

Volunteers from the FMB community kitchen served delicious meals for the teams and the fans made from locally sourced produce.

The tournament culminated in a nail-biting final between Mombasa and Nairobi where Mombasa pulled off a dramatic finish. The tie was decided by a penalty shootout where the Mombasanese goalkeeper held his nerve  to make the decisive save that sealed the win. The crowd erupted in celebration as the winners hoisted the Royal Cup Trophy.

The closing ceremony was a spectacle of lights and fireworks, honouring standout performances with individual awards.

As the fireworks lit up the Nairobi sky, attendees reflected on the unforgettable journey of the first season of SBFC. Beyond football, the SBFC Royal Cup showcased the Dawoodi Bohra community’s ability to unite people across borders. The event fostered connections, celebrated teamwork, and highlighted Nairobi’s potential to host world-class events. From the roar of fans to the smiles of volunteers, the tournament was a true celebration of sport and community.
